Crude oil production above 1Mbd for second month in a row

Just in time for the Minister’s speech to the CinMiPetrol conference next week in Cartagena, the Ministry announces a second consecutive month with crude oil production above 1Mbd. April’s number was 1,006,799bd which was below the record 1,013,481bd last month but still above the objective and much better than February’s result.

Government jump starts royalties project approvals with OCADTONs

Sounding like something from a Transformers movie and merging the acronym ‘OCAD’ (for the initials in Spanish of the boards that approve projects looking for royalty money) and ‘marathon’, the invented word ‘OCADton’ is supposed to reassure local municipalities that the process is working faster in 2013. From a DNP press release, translated and with commentary by Hydrocarbons Colombia.

Gran Tierra makes it look easy

Gran Tierra makes it look easy

It is not easy but it certainly looks that way when production rises over 40% year-over-year and over 50% sequentially. Revenue, Net Income, Cash are all up over last year. Even 44 days of TransAndino Pipeline interruptions could not prevent Gran Tierra from having a grand quarter.

Ecopetrol still has community blockade troubles in Casanare

On Tuesday, local news portal Prensa Libre Casanare reported that, through the mediation of a delegate of the Ministry of Interior, residents of the Monterrey and Aguazul communities lifted the block on the Cupiagua field, which is controlled by Ecopetrol. According to Luis Eduardo Cardozo, a spokesman for the protesters, the blockade was lifted but the community is still unhappy: “We demand social investment, labor supply and procurement of goods and services,” he said.

Important MinMinas/ANH announcement about applications

We thought this ANH announcement that appears on both the MinMinas and ANH websites was important because it describes a change in procedure for applications and permits as of May 3, 2013. The changes were announced over a year ago but take effect this month. Translated by Hydrocarbons Colombia.

Does this man look worried?

MinMinas Federico Renjifo has a big smile as he helps an unidentified citizen of Valle de Cauca cook on her new gas stove. Maybe it is a sign that he believes more in the concept that there are over 16 years-worth of gas reserves than the concept that the country will run be in shortages by 2019. Another Puerto Gaitan community protests against Pacific Rubiales

This article in on a website that frequently criticizes the extractive industry is perhaps exaggerated, but at root there is also an issue: local communities do not perceive direct benefits from oil and gas activities in their communities.

Former British Prime Minister to the rescue

When we saw this, we thought it was a garbled rumor but it appeared on the National Planning Department (DNP) website. Then on TV we saw Blair sitting with senior DNP officials and smiling to the press at the foot of the main staircase in the presidential palace. The story passed from rumor to theater of the absurd. From a DNP press release, translated and with commentary by Hydrocarbons Colombia.

Ecopetrol 1Q13 results: general causes or special causes?

Ecopetrol 1Q13 results: general causes or special causes?

Ecopetrol’s results always grab our attention because they come out first. It is tempting to think of them as a bellwether for the industry if only because of the weight the state-owned-enterprise (SOE) has in total Colombian market calculations. So when the giant disappoints, as it did in 1Q13, it is worth asking the question if the causes are common to the industry in general or are unique to Ecopetrol.
