The HCC Analyst was concerned to see his graph of oil prices and the Colombian peso / USD exchange rate used in Friday’s newsletter without – in his opinion – the proper caveats. He demanded time to explain what was happening more carefully. (We think deep down he did not have anything else prepared, but we do agree that Friday’s article glossed over some important points.)
As I told you last time, we are preparing a book so I needed to reread all our weekly summaries about the FARC peace process. It was interesting to see what had changed, what was still an issue, what we thought was important from reading the Colombian press and what I had expected to be important, but which got very little attention. Here I look deeper into the topics we covered and what they might mean.
Oil prices and dollar exchange rates are two of the most-watched metrics in the country. These two have had a variable behavior in recent months. Mauricio Cárdenas, Minister of Finance, spoke on this issue and the benefits of an increase in oil prices.
Oil companies have allocated significant resources to social investment in recent years, despite Colombia’s social and security issues. The oil boom helped to increase this metric, but investments continued despite the oil crisis.
Industry experts took the stage of the International Congress of Clean Energy to talk about the impact that these resources would have on energy tariffs in Colombia, among other topics.
